Challenger Division
(Want
to be a Challenger "Buddy"?)
Lakeland City Baseball began its participation in the Challenger
Division baseball in 2007. The Challenger Division was established in 1991
by Little League as a separate division of Little League Baseball to
enable boys and girls with physical and mental disabilities,
ages 5-18, to enjoy the game of baseball along with the millions of
other children who participate in this sport worldwide. LCB is proud
to be involved in this important outreach to our community and is
pleased in the growth this program has enjoyed over the years.
Our Challenger Division is headed by coach Chris Canning, who has managed and coached baseball for LCB for many years. His experience in youth sports makes him well-qualified to head this program. You can contact Chris with any questions related to the Challenger Division by clicking the Contact button on this page.
Each Challenger Division player is accompanied by a buddy, who can be a parent, sibling, friend or just someone wanting to help the players have fun and enjoy the game. Each buddy provides assistance as needed, for example, a player in a wheelchair may need a push around the bases, or a child with developmental delays may need assistance with batting or throwing; others may need help catching or simply finding the bases. We have players with a wide variety of special needs, therefore buddies are very important, providing encouragement to help Challenger Division players achieve their goals of having fun and participating in an organized game of baseball.
Being a Challenger Buddy is also a great way to get community service hours and put a smile on someone's face while doing it!
